Whether you’re lusting after waist-length natural waves or just want a half decent ponytail for once in your life, hair extensions can be the instant solution to all your hair issues.
HOWEVER, it’s important to know what you’re actually getting for your money. Because, obvious or bad hair extensions and damaged leftovers is so not hot.
First, it is imperative to understand a little about hair extensions and how they operate.
What Types of Hair Extensions Can You Get?
There are two main categories of hair extensions:
Temporary (Take in and out each day)
Temporary methods include clip-in pieces and halos.
Semi-Permanent (Are Worn Continuously, for Many months)
Semi-Permanent methods include individual, small weft and large weft attachments added using heat, glue, fusion, or micro rings or bonds. These are semi-permanent because they must still be removed and refitted every 4 to 6 weeks.

How Do I Know Which Type Of Hair Extensions I Should Get?
Temporary methods are great for occasional wear and are usually used by those who like their own hair, but just want to enhance their look for the weekend or for a special event.
Ciip-in hair extensions are excellent as they can be easily clipped in and styled in minutes and then removed just as easily; However, heed this warning…Clip-Ins should not be used for daily use. These extensions usually come in multiple lengths and with heavy amounts of hair on them. While this feels like you are getting bang for your buck, the heaviness of each piece on one area of your head continuously can eventually cause stress to the follicle and even worse, hair loss in that area. While great for a special occasion, these should not be used to replace semi-permanent methods.
Halo extensions are also great. A weft of hair is on a thin wire that hides easily on top of your head while your hair sits atop the weft weighing it down to hold it in place. However, this temporary set is not great for those with thinning hair as the limited weight of their own hair fails to hold the weft in place. Also, it can be more visible and is difficult to wear multiple hair styles.
Semi-permanent Methods are optimal for those who are disappointed with their own hair and feel they need additional hair to gain volume, length or both on a daily basis.
At North, we specialize in Beaded Halo and Invisible Tape-In Hair Extensions, the two least invasive and most natural looking hair extension methods in the beauty industry.

Are Hair Extensions Bad For Your Hair?
As we mentioned before, Temporary methods are perfect for occasional use, but should never be used daily as they can cause long term damage to your hair.
Semi-permanent Hair Extensions can be used for an entire lifetime and will not cause damage if the correct products and methods are used and maintenance is followed. It is important to note, that they should be re-fitted after they’ve started to grow out (usually 4-6weeks) to avoid pulling on your natural hair and damaging it.
Don’t be tempted to remove permanent extensions yourself as you can damage your hair. Always get them removed at the hair salon by a certified extension specialist.

How Do I Take Care of Hair Extensions?
Caring for hair extensions is not difficult. The main rules are:
- Shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. We love Davines’ Momo Shampoo and Conditioner which smells amazing and applies lighter moisture. Avoid applying conditioners or oils on your roots as this may cause slippage in the extensions.
2. Always use a extension safe brush when combing extensions, like the Extension Wet Brush. Start at the ends and work your way up. Be sure to hold above the area you are combing to limit pulling and tugging on the connection.
3. Apply a hair extension oil to your extensions daily. Remember, your hair extensions are not directly attached to your scalp so they do not receive the nutrients created by your natural sebum. We love Saphira’s The One, which is rich in multiple highly absorbent oils, minerals, and antioxidants.

4. Place your hair in a loose ponytail or braid when you sleep to avoid knotting.
5. Dry thoroughly at the roots. When drying your hair, ensure to get all the moisture out of the top of the extensions first before working your way down to the ends.
6. Watch the heat. Remember, it is human hair so use the same process you use in protecting your own hair. Use a heat protectant like Living Proof’s Restore Instant Protection which protects up to 450 degrees and ensure your hot iron is turn to 360 degrees or below.
Common Hair Extension Mistakes To Avoid
Poor Quality Hair. Some salons find it difficult to get good quality hair, even if it’s expensive, it can still be over-processed and not long lasting.
Bad Color Matching. Hair Extensions are generally one or two colors, so color matching can be difficult if you are not using blending techniques like our Beaded Halo method. Also, eif you are a blonde with a natural deeper grow out, ensure your stylist is smudging the root of your extensions to avoid a harsh line between color appointments.
Hair Extensions Not Blended In and Cut Properly. Inexperienced salons can leave extensions as is for fear of cutting too much extension hair or lack of education on how to cut. Hair Extensions, even clip ins, should be cut to blend with your natural hair to avoid looking fake or mullet-like.
No Aftercare Advice Given. Most salons do not guide their clients through hot to take care of their hair, and definitely their hair extensions, to gain optimum health and styling. Simple routines can save damage to your hair, prevent matting and help extensions last longer.
Forgetting To Take Care Of Your Natural Hair. Hair Extensions are amazing, but don’t forget to treat and care for your natural hair. We always highly recommend using a hair growth product like Zenagen to help your natural hair grow and improve in health as well as a weekly bond-building strengthening treatment, like Olaplex 3. While you can wear hair extensions for a lifetime, lets do what we can to help our natural hair be the best it can be.

How To Get The Perfect Hair Extensions
Find An Expert Salon. Make sure the result you want is achievable with how much hair you currently have. If you have thin hair or its very short, you may only be able to add enough hair extensions to create thickness or add 2 to 3 inches of length.
Don’t Settle For A Bad Color Match. You should never compromise with the color match as even a minimal difference is noticeable. You should also never highlight extension hair to match your hair. Extension hair has already been processed to achieve the color it is. Highlighting could affect the shine, feel, and longevity of the hair extensions.
Ask Questions. Any Good Hair Stylist wants to share their knowledge with you and cares about you and your new hair, so you should be able to ask any question and expect a thorough, informative answer. Hair extensions can change your appearance dramatically, so you should feel comfortable and be able to ask your stylist lots of questions.
