Salt can be very healing…it promotes the absorption of nutrients, reduces swelling and treats wounds. There are so many benefits of salt; However, this beloved element can wreak havoc on our hair. Eek!
The ocean, salt water pools and jacuzzis are obvious, but how about soft water household filtration systems and sweat? Salt is lurking in more areas than you think.
Soft water is made from salt. Salt dehydrates your skin and hair. This alone creates a challenge. Now add the dull dry tangles created by this dehydration. Brushing those out could be additionally damaging if you are not using the proper brush, product, and care. If you have a soft water filtration system in your home, you may be doing damage that you didn’t expect. Ensure you are using ample moisturizing and nourishing products to combat excessive drying of your hair. We recommend a weekly deep conditioning treatment, like Saphira Mineral Mud or Davines NouNou Hair Mask. Both are chock full of anti-oxidants, moisture, and of course, water.
Once or twice a week, follow your shampoo with one of these treatments. Use a wide-tooth comb or our Tangle Teezer Aqua Brush (the best brush for gentle detangling) to evenly distribute your treatment from mid-shaft to ends. Remember, you don’t need the treatment on your scalp. Leave on for five to ten minutes and rinse.
Another heavy-duty source of salt is in your sweat! That’s right… all those great workouts you love (or don’t love but bikini season is around the corner) may lead to sweat. Have you ever had sweat drip into your mouth? Pretty salty, huh? Ensure you are rinsing that sweat (aka salt) out of your hair post workout. Even if you are using a dry shampoo, you want to ensure that you are using a product that will clean and remove the salt or sweat not just mask it. We love Living Proof’s Dry Shampoo. Their patented formula repels sweat, dirt and oil literally lifting it off the hair shaft. Many dry shampoos just leaves powdery residue to mask the dirt and oil. Make sure you are either rinsing out the salt or using a cleansing dry shampoo like Living Proof.
