Don’t Waste Your Energy!

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, we expend more energy in every sense, than we do all year.  It’s easy to feel energy plunges as we juggle social engagements, gift shopping, work parties, and just sensory overload.  Not only are we prone to wasting our personal energy, but we also waste more natural energy, food, and garbage than at any other time of year.  It is estimated that Americans throw away a million extra tons of garbage each week during the holiday season.

So how can we stop the madness? North Authentic has your back. Read on to learn some key tips on how to limit your waste this holiday season.

1. Dinner Parties and Gatherings Don’t Have To Spell WASTE

According to Worldwatch Institute, an organization devoted to sustainability issues, “In the United States, we generate an extra 5 million tons of household waste each year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, including three times as much food waste as at other times of the year.

When we’re hosting we can tend to go overboard with food. Hosts fearing there won’t be enough can overdo the amount purchased and prepped. Here are some great ways that we can ensure we are not contributing to that number.

Here are a few tips on what to do with those left-overs to limit waste:

  • Since large dinners with many guests typically mean a variety of dishes, cooks should keep in mind that they may not need to make a large portion of each and every dish. Plan and prep realistically, especially those dishes that don’t freeze or reheat well, to reduce unwanted food left at the end of the meal.
  • Buy imperfect-looking produce for cooked dishes, such as small or bruised apples and potatoes that will be used in pies or will be mashed.  Such produce might otherwise be wasted by stores.
  • Tell guests to bring containers so they can take home leftovers.
  • Immediately freeze fresh fruit that you can use later for smoothies
  • Freeze turkey bones for bone broth, an amazingly healthy soup during flu and cold season
  • Get creative with your leftovers. A friend always made a delicious Turkey Tortilla Soup with her leftovers. I mean, there are only so many turkey sandwiches that one person can eat.

2. Recycle Your Christmas Tree

sustainability, how to limit waste over the holidays, recycle your christmas tree

Each year, 10 million Christmas trees end up in a landfill. While your tree won’t fit in the recycling bin with your cans and bottles, you can recycle your tree! Many cities offer programs to turn your tree into mulch or wood chips. Some cities even use your old trees to do important environmental projects like streambank stabilization.

Visit the National Christmas Tree Association or do a web search to find a “Christmas tree recycling program” near you.

3. Buy Sustainable, Ethically Sourced, and Eco-friendly for all your gift giving.

Sustainability is one of the greatest challenges our world is facing today, so if you do choose to purchase retail gifts, try to select products that come in minimal packaging, are made from sustainable or recycled materials, and/or can be easily recycled.

4. Donate or Give Experiential Gifts

donating for the holidays, holiday charity, holiday donations

We all have more than we need these days, so why give more products that may just end up in a garage sale or landfill.  Organizations like World Visionrated Superstar Status by Global Giving, make giving easy with a gift catalog. Donations can be as low as $25 to provide medicine for a child or $110 to provide a goat and two chickens to a family!

Another favorite gift is to give the gift of experience. By giving gifts that can be experienced, you can minimize wrapping and shopping.  Anything that allows your loved one to spend quality time experiencing something fun, new or interesting will make a gift sure to be remembered for years to come.

5. Donate Your Time to a Special Cause

Get into the holiday spirit by volunteering! There are countless ways to help improve your community-and the planet-from cleaning up a local beach to helping stuff bags for children across the United States who need to be rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Doing volunteer work can trigger a release of endorphins, those feel-good molecules in our body that keep depression and drowsiness at bay.

As we promised, every North Authentic newsletter will be introducing you to one of our lines.  We have spent surmountable time searching for lines that represent all of our desire for sustainable, eco-friendly, fashionable styles and accessories and organic beauty products that actually perform.

This week, we would love to introduce you to Nash and Jones.  This women-owned, organic, handmade skin care line not only performs, but it’s beautiful packaging makes it the perfect gift for her or him this holiday.

The Nash and Jones commitment began out of necessity.  The founders of N&J had a strong negative reactions to products filled with chemicals, dyes, perfumes and preservatives, so  they adopted a more natural lifestyle. This included changes to what they consumed on the inside plus the outside. It was a revelation to discover that they didn’t have to settle for the big box selection but rather could have complete control of what they consume. What N&J learned about the ingredients we all have been using was shocking. They are appalled by what we were putting on/into our bodies through our skin. After all, what we put onto our skin also gets absorbed into the body.

Those dyes, chemicals, petroleum and perfumes damage our skin and our health plus cancel out the benefits of the good ingredients. N&J’s passion for consuming only clean ingredients led them to craft products to nourish our skin rooted in the amazing benefits of organic oils, butters and beeswax. Our skin produces oils to hydrate and aid our skin’s healthy cell life cycle, so N&J’s products employ the highest quality, non-comedogenic oils and complimentary natural ingredients to nourish skin, encourage cell regeneration and keep pores clean & bright.
